Indonesia’s box office may not have yet returned to pre-pandemic levels of admissions, but it’s a market that is growing, thanks to cautious cinema construction and a boom in the popularity of local films, and has plenty of room for further expansion.
Admissions for 2024 are expected to reach 120 million by the end of the year, an increase of 5% compared to 114.5 million admissions in 2023, although a 20% decrease from 152 million in the pre-pandemic year of 2019. The market currently has around 2,300 screens for a population of 280 million, so with more than 120,000 people per screen, Indonesia is way behind the per capita screen count of neigbouring markets such as Thailand and Malaysia.
