Spotlight on Malaysia: Are the global streamers speaking your language?
www.streamlined.news
Welcome to Streamlined, a weekly newsletter that will summarise and analyse events in the content industries outside of the Americas & Europe. Every few weeks, Streamlined will look at a territory that we haven’t heard much from during the pandemic. This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Malaysia, while in other news, it’s been a busy week for Asian directors boarding high-end English-language series; CJ ENM and Stan are expanding their content war chests; and several new Indian and Hong Kong projects have been announced, along with some festival and arthouse channel news.

The SEAsian streamers local-local content strategy will be the death of them. How do you differentiate what Disney, Viu, WeTV, iQiyi, even Netflix etc are doing??? its all low-budget gen z skewing romance comedies that won't break out and travel. WeTV and iQiyi are dying slow deaths and Viu's hanging on by racing to the bottom, ask what happened to their development processes... They all need to stop trading execs between each other and start finding bolder original voices who can cut through recycled pitches and 4 year old content strategy decks and become actual tastemarkers. Such a potentially vibrant SEAsian and Nusantara market being run to the ground with out-moded thinking where co-production cannot flourish and unfortunate soft bigotry of low expectations.
Another cracker Liz!
